The March 2021 MOM is Dethra Stephens. Javondis aka Boss Man, is her son who was born with Down Syndrome. Javondis who is now 20 years old, will need Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) heart surgery to replace his leaking valves with mechanical valves due to them not pumping oxygen to the vital parts of his body. This can cause pulmonary hypertension which can result in death. Atrioventricular Septal Defect (AVSD) is the most frequently diagnosed congenital heart condition in children with Down Syndrome.

Dethra and Javondis need your help! Please show your support by purchasing Javondis’ custom-made hoodie at www.hoodies4healing.com. His hoodie is a brilliant blue and yellow, his favorite colors and also the colors for Down Syndrome Awareness Month, which is in October. 50% of all sales of hoodies, tees and masks will go towards his medical bills, medications, surgeries, etc.

Dethra and Javondis have always been very close. As a single mom, she has been taking care of her son with special needs without any help outside of her mother, who passed away in 2014 from stomach cancer.

Down Syndrome remains the most common chromosomal condition diagnosed in the United States. Each year, about 6,000 babies born in the United States have Down Syndrome. This means that Down Syndrome occurs in about 1 in every 700 babies.

Children with Down Syndrome have an extra chromosome called Trisomy 21. To Dethra and Javondis, this means “How much LOVE you give beings with YOU! I, Javondis, give a little extra T21= EXTRA LOVE!

‚ÄúIt definitely takes a village to raise a child with special needs, along with God’s grace and mercy,‚Ä̬†says Stephens. Before COVID-19, Javondis would go to school from 8:30-2:30 pm and then she would get off her job to pick him up and then take him back to work with her for the remainder of her shift. Since COVID-19, Javondis has had to stay at home with volunteers assisting while Stephens is at work.¬† ¬†

They both love listening to music and dancing together, as that is her son‚Äôs favorite pastime. ‚ÄúDancing brings him so much joy!‚ÄĚ says Stephens.¬†Javondis also loves bowling and participating in the Special Olympics.¬† ¬†

If you are a single mother with a sick child, please submit your information to michelle@vmscommunciations.net to be featured as MOM!
